Master of Occupational Therapy program at L-A College receives Reaccreditation

The Accrediting Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) recently granted reaccreditation for a ten year period to the Master in Occupational Therapy program at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College. This is longest time period for reaccreditation granted by ACOTE, reserved only for those programs meeting their highest standards.

In making its decision, ACOTE officials noted that the LAC program boasted one of the strongest curricula and some of the best-prepared students it had encountered. It specifically commended the strength of the director, faculty, and college administration. The report also noted the depth of the library holdings in the occupational therapy field.

Graduates of the MOT program at LAC have enjoyed a very high success rate with the NBCOT national certifying exam. Over 98% of them have passed this rigorous exam, compared to a national average of 84%. “This demonstrates very cleary that our graduates are well-prepared to become outstanding practitioners in their field,” notes Dr. Roxie Black, director of the MOT program. “In addition, 100% of our graduates have successfully found employment as occupational therapists.”

The MOT program at LAC recently completed a mentoring project that was funded through a grant from the American Occupational Therapy Foundation, one of only five such programs funded in the United States. This program helped to strengthen the MOT curriculum and its graduates.

As part of their strong connection in the community, MOT students have conducted a number of community service projects, including a “back-pack awareness” program at Lisbon Falls Elementary School, and a research collaboration with Westside neurorehabilitation therapists.

This MOT program, available only at LAC, is a two-year, and six month full-time program designed for people who hold a baccalaureate degree in a discipline other than occupational therapy. A three or four year part-time option is also available. Students who do not yet hold a bachelor’s degree may matriculate in one of the undergraduate programs at LAC, and be eligible to complete both the bachelor's and MOT degrees in five years through the “jump start” program.
