Students from the University of Southern Maine at Lewiston-Auburn (USM/L-A)
will sponsor an International Poetry Slam on Tuesday, November
2nd. The students are from the International Student Organization
of Lewiston-Auburn (ISOLA) and from Professor Barry Rodrigue's
Western Civilization I class and French North American Studies
class. The event will take place at USM-LA's Function Room
(Room 170) at 51 Westminster Street in Lewiston from 10 am
to 2 pm. The public is invited to attend.
All who would like to contribute poems or other forms of
poetic expression are welcome to come and share their work
with us. A special prize will be given to the democratically
elected 'winners' at 2 pm! A potluck lunch will follow, so
attendees are asked to bring please bring some delicacies
to share.
The students from the French North American Studies class
will present poems from around French America. Student teams
from the Western Civilization class will host tables during
the event and make presentations about creativity in ancient
societies. Special appearances will include:
Otrude Moyo - poet from Zimbabwe and Assistant Professor
at USM
Gary Lawless - bioregionalist poet from Brunswick will share
his poems
and tales of poetry activism from around the world.
Godfrey Banda - poet from Zimbabwe and Lewiston resident.
Jawab
Khalif, poet from Somalia and Lewiston resident.
