Nursing Program at L-A College Wins Federal
Grant
USM's College of Nursing and Health Professions (CONHP) has
been awarded a significant federal grant to help expand the
nursing program at Lewiston-Auburn College (LAC). This three-year
grant of $800,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services will enable USM to more than double the size of the
nursing program on the Lewiston-Auburn campus. Jane Kirschling,
dean of CONHP, expects this to have a major impact on the
looming nursing shortage in this area. I think it will
help western and southern Maine, said Kirschling. That
is, I think, an important contribution.
To accommodate this program growth, the following new faculty
members have been appointed:
Bonnie C. Farmer, RN, Ph.D., associate professor of
nursing. Farmer, formerly of Tampa, FL, will also serve as
the new Nursing Program Coordinator at LAC.
Melinda Zimmer-Rankin, RN, MS, CCRN, new additional
full-time nursing faculty member. Rankin resides in Raymond
and was formerly assistant professor of nursing and lab coordinator
at St. Joseph's College in Standish.
This grant will also enable LAC to hire an administrative
assistant and a K-12 Liason/Recruiter for the nursing program.
The grant also provides significant funding for student peer
tutoring which helps students academically AND financially.
Anyone interested in the nursing program at LAC is encouraged
to call 753-6500 for more information.
