March 2005
The University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn
Campus will host an information session April 14 for the
Master of Arts program in Leadership Studies (MLS). This
innovative program, available only on the L-A campus, provides
opportunities for organizational and community leaders to
build a deep understanding of the dynamics of leadership,
how leadership interacts with other human dynamics, and the
role of the leader in society.
The mission of the program is to develop professionals who
•
understand the nature of human relationships
•
appreciate the impact individuals can have on society
•
exercise effective, ethical leadership in organizations and
communities in the context of globalization
"The program is designed around a set of compelling
outcomes: leadership, knowledge, skills, and orientation," says
Dr. Marv Druker, associate professor at USM/L-A. “Students
study leadership through the humanities and social sciences,
as well as by examination of leadership research and theory.” The
MLS coursework integrates scholarship with fieldwork application
to help students advance their skills in integrative analytic
thinking and to develop their understanding of communities
and organizations within a complex global society. International
study for short, intensive courses designed for working students
is also available.
The MLS program is designed to enable working adults to
pursue it on a part time basis. Courses meet on a weekly
basis and are scheduled in the late afternoon and evening.
The information session will be held Thursday, April 14,
from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., at USM/L-A on Westminster Street
in Lewiston. Anyone interested in attending is asked to call
the College at 753-6552. Applications for the MLS program
are currently being accepted on a rolling basis. Application
materials can be requested from the College or by downloading
them from the web site at www.usm.maine.edu/lac/programs.
