USMs L-A College Announces Masters
in Leadership
The University of Southern Maines Lewiston-Auburn College
(LAC) will launch its Master of Arts in Leadership Studies
(MLS) in the Fall 2003. This innovative program will provide
opportunities for organizational and community leaders to
build a deep understanding of the dynamics of leadership,
how leadership interacts with other human dynamics, and the
role of the leader in society.
The mission of the program is to develop professionals who
- understand the nature of human relationships
- appreciate the impact individuals can have on society
- exercise effective, ethical leadership in organizations
and communities in the context of globalization
The curriculum plan, presented at the November 2002 International
Leadership Association annual meetings in Seattle, was acclaimed
as cutting edge in this rapidly developing field
of study. One of the academic reviewers said this about the
MLS program: "The curriculum is intriguing. Your four
components--cornerstones, competencies, contexts, and capstone--create
a comprehensive curriculum that covers all the necessary aspects
of leadership studies at the graduate level . . . . you are
defining quality for the field."
"The program is designed around a set of compelling
outcomes: leadership, knowledge, skills, and orientation,"
says Dr. Marv Druker, associate professor at LAC. Students
will study leadership through the humanities and social sciences,
as well as by examination of leadership research and theory.
The MLS coursework integrates scholarship with fieldwork application
to help students advance their skills in integrative analytic
thinking and to develop their understanding of communities
and organizations within a complex global society. International
study for short, intensive courses designed for working students
will be available.
Numerous surveys and informal discussions have demonstrated
strong community demand for a graduate program in leadership
studies. The College anticipates that students will come from
a wide variety of professions and sectors, but that all will
possess a general understanding of the workings of organizations.
Many will currently be working in leadership positions. The
incoming first class will be limited to 20 students for this
part-time program aimed at serving working professionals.
Applications for the MLS program are currently being accepted
on a rolling basis. Anyone interested in learning more about
the program or admission requirements is encouraged to call
the College at 753- 6500 or to visit usm.maine.edu/lac/programs.
Application materials can also be requested from the College
or by downloading them from the web.
