Master's in Literacy Education at USM/Lewiston-Auburn
March 2005
Teachers interested in pursuing literacy education at the
Lewiston-Auburn campus of the University of Southern Maine
are invited to attend an informational meeting Thursday,
April 14, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. This program, offered through
the College of Education and Human Development of the University
of Southern Maine, is designed for classroom teachers, literacy
specialists, and other educators whose primary responsibility
is helping students to become competent language users.
The purpose of the literacy program is to develop and support
excellence in literacy instruction. This master’s degree
program provides teachers with a thorough understanding of
reading and writing processes and instruction. Participants
acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective
advocates for improving literacy instruction in their schools.
Literacy education courses are offered at the L-A campus
of USM every semester and in the summer. Most students are
part-time and complete the degree option in three to four
years. Courses leading to the State ESL endorsement are offered
and may be taken as a concentration within the literacy education
master's program, or separately. Other options include the
literacy certificate and a post-master’s certificate
of advanced study (CAS). The literacy certificate program
is offered to give students a basic background in literacy,
but does not result in a master’s degree. The CAS is
available for those who already hold a master’s degree
and want advanced study. Some of the courses in the program
have no prerequisites and are open to non-matriculated students.
The meeting will be held in Room 170 at USM/L-A , 51 Westminster
Street in Lewiston. Faculty and advising representatives
will be present to discuss the program and answer any questions.
Light refreshments will be served. Anyone interested in attending
is asked to call 753-6552 to register or obtain more information.
