Fall Courses for Teachers at USM's L-A
College

The University of Southern Maine's Lewiston-Auburn College
(LAC) is offering a number of graduate courses for teachers
in the upcoming fall semester that begins August 30. These
courses are delivered through USM's College of Education and
Human Development. While some classes are full, enrollment
remains open for the following three-credit courses to be
held this fall:
EDU 521 Electronic Literacy (Mondays, 4:00-6:30 p.m.)
This course offers educators and librarians a hands-on experience
in the uses of the Internet in K-12 education. The course
covers electronic mail, online conferencing, academic and
educational resources, online learning techniques, electronic
research, and construction of individual home pages. Participants
learn to: evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of online
resources; integrate the Internet into the curriculum; use
the Internet for professional development; compose and publish
home pages; and analyze pedagogical, legal, social, ethical,
and economic issues embedded in electronic literacy.
EDU 559 Aspects of Reading for Multilingual Learner (Tuesdays,
4:00-6:30 p.m.)
This course examines the role of the literacy for learners
of linguistic and cultural diversity. The influence of first
language on reading in another language, contrasting differences
between first and second language reading, the role of vocabulary,
and aspects of comprehension are among the topics of study.
The differences between learning how to read in a second language
for the first time and reading English with first language
literacy are highlighted.
SED 540 Teaching the Exceptional Child (alt. Saturdays, 8:00
a.m.-3:00 p.m.)
This course is an introduction to the unique characteristics
and needs of special education students. Topics will include
understanding characteristics of students with disabilities,
implementing instructional strategies, working with parents,
and understanding state and federal laws and policies.
SED 611 Nature and Needs of Exceptional Learners (Saturdays,
11:00 a.m. noon)
This course focuses on the unique characteristics and educational
and social/emotional needs of children and youth who display
a range of learning and behavioral difficulties including
learning disabilities, mild forms of developmental delay,
and mild to moderate forms of behavioral and adjustment problems.

Registration is open and continues through the first week
