College Courses for H.S. Students at
USM’s
L-A College
June 2004
Local high school students interested in taking college courses
in the fall semester may do so at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn
College (LAC) through the Early Study program. This academic
enrichment program is designed to enable qualified juniors
and seniors to earn college credits while still in high school.
In general, USM Early Study participants are advanced students
in the top 20% of their classes. Students who are home-schooled
may also be eligible to participate in the program. Early
Study at USM is intended to help students supplement, not
supplant, the academic program of the high school, and recommendations
from guidance counselors are required. Iris Guillemette, Student
Services Advisor and Early Study Program Coordinator at LAC,
describes Early Study as "an excellent opportunity for
students to enrich their high school programs and become familiar
with the college setting. More than 125 students took advantage
of this program on our three campuses last year.”
High school students interested in taking USM courses at
the Lewiston-Auburn campus must submit an application form
and a copy of their transcript and then meet with one of the
academic advisors at the College. The advisor will facilitate
the course registration process and work closely with high
school officials to ensure that students have a positive experience
and that schools receive the documentation they need regarding
the student's performance.
The costs of participating in the Early Study program include
tuition and fees as well as book and supply expenses. USM
offers Early Study students a waiver of one-half tuition for
up to six credit hours or two courses (whichever is greater)
if all criteria are met. Students interested in participating
should also contact their guidance office to explore if their
school qualifies for reimbursement for the costs involved.

appointment with an advisor, please call LAC at 753-6500.
