An exhibit designed to heighten
awareness of domestic violence is currently on display at
USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College (LAC). Titled “All
Around Us’” the exhibit includes national and
international public service announcements and posters focused
on the tragedy of family violence. Also included are various
resources, information, and educational materials that describe
the severity of the problem and also identify how people can
get help. The exhibit was created as part of a class project
in the Applied Social Policy course at LAC. “We decided
to raise awareness and promote education of domestic violence,”
said Anne Marie Byrne and Deidre Pratt, two students who worked
on the project. “We hope it will spark a flame of interest
and help each of us face the truth of our own lives and the
truth of what is All Around Us.”
This student project on domestic violence is the first one
to be exhibited in the new display area at LAC, which enables
students to engage the community in the exploration of issues
that emerge from course assignments. In extending the audience
for students’ projects beyond their classmates and instructors,
the display area provides other members of the LAC community
and visitors to the campus with opportunities to learn from
student work. Funding for the display was made possible in
part by the USM Student Government Association.
