Organizational Consulting Course at USM’s
L-A College
July 2004
What consultants do and how they do it effectively will be
the focus of a course starting later this month at USM’s
Lewiston-Auburn College. LOS 487, Organizational Consulting,
offered through the leadership and organizational studies
program, will cover topics such as consulting roles and strategies,
the phases of consulting, self-assessment, and ethical considerations.
Students will work in a team to apply organizational concepts
and theories to a real-life organizational situation. “One
premise of the course is that since we all have a wealth of
experience in the role of helper (consultant) and in the role
of “helpee”(client), explained instructor Dr.
Mary Lou Michael. The class will function as a learning laboratory,
exploring how these experiences and those of other consultants
impact our views and practices.
Each year, a local organization serves as the "client"
asking for help with a specific organizational problem or
issue. The organizational client for this summer’s class
is U.F. Strainrite, Inc. Past clients have included Harriman
Associates, Dion Distributors and Safe Handling, Inc.
Dr. Michael brings to the classroom 25 years' experience
as an organizational development consultant, and has been
teaching this course at LAC since 1997. She worked for the
Unum Corporation for six years and has run her own business
since 1986. Her clients have included corporations, small
businesses, non-profit organizations, schools and universities.
The course will be offered in a special one-week session,
July 26-30, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration will
remain open until the first class meeting. Anyone interested
in taking the course is encouraged to contact Dr. Michael
at 865-2121 or email at maryloumi@aol.com.
Individuals who wish to register may contact the LAC Business
Office at 753-6530.
