July 2005
Betty Robinson, Ph.D., associate professor of leadership
and organizational studies at USM's Lewiston-Auburn College,
has been awarded the Donald Harward Faculty Award for Service
Learning Excellence. This award is presented through the Maine
Campus Compact to faculty members who have demonstrated a
significant commitment to practicing and promoting service
learning. Dr. Robinson was cited for her work "to increase
opportunities for active student learning through the interweaving
of classroom learning with hands-on service experience in
order for students to gain a sense of their own efficacy in
the world." Robinson recently led a group of students
on a trip to universities in Botswana and South Africa to
explore establishing international academic, business, and
community partnerships.
The Maine Campus Compact is a statewide coalition of college
and university presidents established to encourage and enhance
campus engagement in the community. The Harward Faculty Awards
are presented annually in honor of former Bates College President
Donald Harward. Other 2005 honorees are Mark H. Kavanaugh
of Kennebec Valley Community College and Edward Laine of Bowdoin
College.
