Democratic Process Discussion

The League of Young Voters representative Jenna Vendil explains the 2008 referendum questions to members attending a brown-bag discussion recently held at USM LAC. The talk was organized by the USM LAC Office of Community Service.

The Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement at USM's Lewiston-Auburn College recently hosted a "Brown Bag Discussion" about the Democratic process. Jenna Vendil from the League of Young Voters presented non-partisan information about the referendum questions on the November 2008 ballot. Other topics of the lunchtime discussion included information about absentee voting as well as an explanation of the Electoral College presented by the USM LAC campus interim Dean, Marv Druker. State Representative Margaret Craven and State Senator Peggy Rotundo were present for the well-attended event which was free and open to the public.

USM LAC's Office of Community Service organizes many events throughout the year to respond to issues of community interest.  Events for the spring semester are now being developed and will include such topics as supporting non-traditional students, exploring alternative forms of transportation and integrating children and higher education. The Office is also planning a local music and dance community building event in January. Anyone that has ideas for community events, community based projects or needs more information regarding the work of the Office of Community Service Learning and Civic Engagement, please email commservlac@gmail.com or call 753-6547.
