The University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement is preparing for this year's Community Partner Breakfast, which is scheduled for Wednesday, August 13 from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. at USM LAC in room 170. The annual breakfast recognizes local organizations and members of USM LAC for their commitment to Service Learning in Lewiston and Auburn. Service Learning engages students in applying their academic program to community involvement through volunteerism, activism, and community outreach. During the past academic year, students, faculty, and members of the community worked with community partners in projects such as the Lewiston Food Assessment (which is conducting research around nutritional needs and availability of healthy food), development of a college student-focused healthy lifestyle program, and organized interactive tours at USM LAC for alternative education students who are routinely excluded from the college recruiting process.
The breakfast is an opportunity for the public to see how USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College and local businesses and organizations have worked together to build more of a community during the past academic year. There will be a project development workshop following the breakfast in which community partners are invited to help the University plan upcoming projects based on the needs of their organizations. This will be an opportunity to network and brainstorm to develop innovative projects for the coming year. The workshop portion of the event will take place from 10:15am-1p.m. The breakfast is free and open to the public.
