March 2007
Deputy Chief Joseph K. Loughlin of the Portland Police Department, co-author of the book “Finding Amy; A True Story of a Murder in Maine”, will be visiting USM’s Lewiston-Auburn campus on Tuesday, March 13, for a presentation and book signing. The book, which Loughlin co-wrote with author Kate Clark Flora, is a first hand account of the murder and subsequent investigation of Amy St. Laurent.
St. Laurent was a 25 year old South Berwick woman who disappeared in October 2001 after an evening with friends in Portland’s Old Port. Her disappearance set off an intense search that captured state-wide attention. Police later found St. Laurent’s body in December 2001, in a shallow grave in Scarborough woods. Jeffery Gorman was arrested and later convicted of the murder. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
The Mystery Writers of America has nominated “Finding Amy” for an Edgar Award. There will be an open forum question session following the presentation, concluding with a book signing session. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place between 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in USM/L-A’s room 170. A limited amount of books will be available for purchase. The event is presented by the Golden Key International Honour Society in conjunction with Campus Crusade for Christ and the Student Activities committee.
