To announce and celebrate a newly designed curriculum centered upon this vitally important question, USM/Lewiston-Auburn will host a discussion on November 8 about liberal education in the 21st century with artists, faculty, students and community members.
This event is coordinated with the opening reception for the Atrium Gallery’s "Signs of the Times" exhibit by Natasha Mayers. Ethical awareness, social responsibility and civic engagement - all areas the artist incorporates into her life and work - are among the learning goals emphasized in USM/L-A’s new common core curriculum. Mayers will speak about the imperative for artists and educators to cultivate compassion and translate it into reflective and informed action to address urgent world issues. She will be joined by artist and activist Robert Shetterly, whose collection of works titled "Americans Who Tell the Truth" was exhibited in the Atrium Gallery last year and continues to travel around the country. In addition, USM Provost Joseph Wood will speak about how USM’s new vision of liberal education takes up these responsibilities.
This event, sponsored by USM’s Gloria S. Duclos Convocation, will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8 in the Function Room at USM/L-A on 51 Westminster Street in Lewiston. Shetterly will speak on “The Obligations of Artists” and Mayers will address the question of “How, Then, Shall I Live?” Provost Wood will discuss “Liberal Education for a Changing World.”
The opening reception for Mayers’ “Signs of the Times” exhibition will follow at 5:00 p.m. in the Atrium Gallery. The public is invited to attend both events. Admission is free.
