Rochelle Riordan of Lisbon has been awarded a prestigious Jeanette Rankin Foundation Scholarship. The Jeannette Rankin Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to awarding grants to low-income women, ages 35 and older. Each grant recipient must has a vision of how a college education will benefit herself, her family, and her community.
A student in the social and behavioral sciences at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College, Riordan was instrumental in the implementation of a Parents as Scholars liaison position for local colleges and universities. As part of her studies for an Applied Social Policy course, Rochelle also conducted extensive research and analysis of the current welfare system under TANF and ASPIRE.
In recommending her for the scholarship, a faculty member wrote: “Without question, she is among the most engaged and enthusiastic students with whom I have ever had the pleasure to work. She brings a model of exemplar academic energy and motivation to our college, and to our community.”
