Two staff members at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn campus were honored recently at the University’s annual professional staff reception.
Nancy Whitehouse, Curriculum Technology Coordinator, was named the recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Professional Staff Award. The award is presented annually and recipients are nominated and then judged by a committee of their peers. Winners of the award must demonstrate outstanding commitment to the university and the community in which they live.
Whitehouse, who lives in Auburn, is also a part-time faculty member who teaches introductory microcomputer courses and courses for the leadership and organizational studies program. She serves on the Education Technology Committee and chairs the Building Expansion Committee. She was a major contributor to introducing personal digital assistants to the nursing program on the USM/L-A campus and has written technology manuals that are regularly used by USM and community members. Outside of USM, she frequently offers her expertise to business, residential and religious groups.
Iris Guillemette, Coordinator of Enrollment Services, was named recipient of the 2006 Emerging Professional Staff Award. Recipients of this award must have fewer than five years of service to USM and have embodied the merits of this award through their contributions, achievements, and talents.
Guillemette, who lives in Lewiston, was hired as an academic advisor shortly after graduating from USM/L-A in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in arts and humanities. She was later promoted to her current position where she continues to demonstrates a strong commitment to outstanding student service. Described by a colleague as a "forceful advocate for our students” Guillemette also coordinates the “Early Study Program” at USM/L-A, an academic enrichment program that enables qualified high school students to take courses at the University
