Several teacher education students from USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College who recently won awards or scholarships were recognized at a year-end ceremony held earlier this month. Two Lewiston teachers, Donna Tardiff and Deanna Nadeau, were special guests at this event. Tardiff, who teaches kindergarten at Montello School, is the current recipient of the Maine Teacher of the Year Award. Nadeau is a first grade teacher at Montello and was a 2004 Milken Family Foundation National Education Award recipient. Tardiff shared with the group her insights for success in the classroom and some of the rewarding experiences she has had in her career.
The CLASS (Collaborative Learning and School Success) Program prepares future teachers for rewarding careers in the classroom. Students are placed in local partner schools immediately and begin working with mentor teachers to understand the everyday experiences of teachers and students. Upon completion of the CLASS Program, students earn their bachelor’s degree in a liberal arts field, state certification to teach K-8, and more than 30 graduate credits towards a master’s degree.
The CLASS PDS (Professional Development School) Program provides all the education courses and experiences required to become a qualified, state-certified candidate for elementary and middle school teaching positions in the State of Maine. The education courses, field experiences and seminars all occur on-site in local public schools, currently the Sherwood Heights Elementary School and Auburn Middle School.
Applications for fall admission to the CLASS PDS program are now being accepted. Those interested are encouraged to call 753-6618 or visit the webpage at www.usm.maine.edu/lac/class for more information. Please note that the CLASS PDS program is designed specifically for undergraduate students.
