
Roxie M. Black, Director and Associate Professor of Occupational
Therapy
Boston University, B.S. in Occupational Therapy;
University of Southern Maine, M.S. in Adult Education; Lesley University,
Ph.D. in Educational Studies.
Professor Black has been the director of the MOT program since
October, 1997. She has been an OT Educator for twenty years, holding
positions of clinical director, level I fieldwork coordinator, tenured
associate professor, assistant department chair, and acting department
chair at the University of New England, prior to coming to USM.
Professor Black's clinical experience includes twenty-five years
of practice in pediatrics, working with children from infancy through
adolescence. She taught the TOTEMS course in Maine and was SCSIT
certified.
At Lewiston/Auburn College Black teaches courses in Research,
Communications for Health Professionals, Social Issues and Ethics,
and Occupation and Clinical Reasoning. Since October 1997, she has
worked with the OT faculty in an extensive curricular revision which
focuses on clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills of students.
The new curriculum was implemented in the Fall of 1999, and recognized
for its "cutting edge" quality by the Accreditation Council
of O.T. Educators.
Her PhD. in educational studies, focused on multicultural curricula
for health professions. Her dissertation research examines
the meaning of cultural competence. She has made numerous international,
national and local presentations, has published on issues of diversity,
and is the co-author of a book entitled "Cultural Competency
for Health Professionals". Professor Black had the honor of
being inducted into the prestigious Roster of Fellows of the American
Occupational Therapy Association at the AOTA National Conference
in Miami, 2002.
