The Atrium Art Gallery at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College (USM LAC) will be presenting 38 of the paintings, September 2 until December 19, 2008, in a semester-long celebration of these powerful portraits. They are of individuals, both deceased and living, both famous and lesser known, with quotes incorporated into the paintings. In addition to being remarkable portraits they chronicle qualities - courage, honesty, and wisdom - inherent in those Americans who, throughout history, have taken the risk to tell their truth. The exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the Samuel Rubin Foundation. In 2005 the Atrium Gallery exhibited a selection of the portraits in our art gallery that proved to be one of our most successful projects. The 2008 exhibition will have a different selection of portraits and the opportunity to have them for a full semester.
Tuesday, Sept. 23, 9 a.m. Gallery talk with curator Robyn Holman and special guest Jane Smith, mother of Samantha Smith, whose portrait is in the exhibition Americans Who Tell the Truth.
Friday, October 17, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Function Room 170. Robert Shetterly speaks about his work in the context of USM LAC’s new core curriculum focusing on democracy, justice, difference, and sustainability. Reception in the Atrium Art Gallery. Free and open to the public.
