| Students who will be attending USM as part of an exchange program with their home school need to complete the following steps: |

| STEP #1: Complete an International Exchange Student Application |
| Submit the following items WITH the completed exchange student application:

A brief essay (300-500 words) stating your reasons for wanting to study at the University of Southern Maine. How will this period of study contribute to your current academic program? Please include any areas of interest or special skills. |

A statement from your academic advisor supporting your program at study at the University of Southern Maine.

If English is not your first language you will need to submit a TOEFL score or complete the attached Language Proficiency Report. If you opt to take a TOEFL test required minimum test scores are as follows: 79 internet/213 computer/550 paper |

Academic transcript from your college or university listing the courses your have taken prior to your enrollment at USM. (This is extremely important as we must be able to verify that you have completed any necessary pre-requisites for upper level courses). |

| STEP #2: Submit appropriate financial documentation showing sufficient funding to cover your expenses during your semester or year at USM. |

The 2009-10 Undergraduate Exchange budget estimates the cost for one semester or one year of study at USM.

How much do YOU need to document? SCHOOL SPECIFIC COSTS ARE NOTED BELOW:
FHSH: $8750 for one semester (you pay tuition & fees to your home school)
KEELE UNIVERSITY:$5750 for one semester (you pay tuition, fees and room to your home school)
LATVIAN ACADEMY OF ART: $5750 for one semester (you pay tuition, fees & room to your home school)
PMFQ/UBO: $8750 for one semester (you pay tuition & fees to your home school)
RADBOUD UNIVERSITY: $8750 for one semester (you pay tuition & fees to your home school)
SOGANG UNIVERSITY: $8750 for one semester (you pay tuition & fees to your home school)
UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER: $8750 for one semester (you pay tuition & fees to your home school)
Please note that if you are staying for a full academic year you must double the costs listed above.

| In order to document sufficient funding students should complete a Declaration of Finances form and submit the appropriate back up documentation. |

| STEP #3: Submit a completed Registration Worksheet signed by your Academic Advisor. |

FALL 2009 COURSES ARE NOW ONLINE! How do you find them?
STEP #1: Go to USM's online course search
STEP #2: Use the series of pull down menus to select "University of Southern
Maine" as the INSTITUTION and "2009 FALL" as the TERM. Hit the Green GO Button
STEP #3: To find the MAJOR you are interested in hit the Green "SELECT SUBJECT" button to find an alphabetical listing of the majors offered at USM. Once you have selected one you'll go back to the course search page.
STEP #4: Once you are back at the course search box "COURSE NUMBER" should be left blank. Use the pull down menu to select UNDERGRAUDATE in the "COURSE CAREER" box. And make sure the next two
boxes are unchecked.
STEP #5: Hit the green SEARCH button for a list of fall classes. (To see a description of the course click on the blue "section number" for the course.
An important note about selecting classes You should only chose classes that are held in PORTLAND or GORHAM (unless you have your own car). It is also important to note that it takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes to travel between these two campuses so you need to build travel time into your schedule if you are taking classes on both campuses.
STEP #6: E-mail your course choices to Kimberly Sinclair in the International Office.
Select at least 4 courses plus 2 alternates. |

| Students can find course descriptions for various courses in the USM undergraduate on-line catalog. |

STEP #4: All incoming exchange students are required to live on campus. A housing application will be mailed to you along with your immmigration documents once the above items from Step #1 & #2 are compelted and returned to our office
If you are living on campus please note that you can only move in on Monday or Tuesday, August 24th or 25th. You will not be able to move in any earlier so if you plan to arrive earlier you'll need to make arrangments for temporary housing. Our office can provide you with hotel information as Maine does not currently have any hostels. |
