Information for Incoming International Exchange Students

Students who will be attending USM as part of an exchange program with their home school need to complete the following steps:

STEP #1:  Complete an International Exchange Student Application

Submit the following items WITH the completed exchange student application:

A brief essay (300-500 words) stating your reasons for wanting to study at the University of Southern Maine. How will this period of study contribute to your current academic program?  Please include any areas of interest or special skills.

A statement from your academic advisor supporting your program at study at the University of Southern Maine.

A TOEFL Score Report (if required) 500 minimum/173 CBT score required

Academic transcript from your college or university listing the courses your have taken prior to your enrollment at USM. (This is extremely important as we must be able to verify that you have completed any necessary pre-requisites for upper level courses).

STEP #2: Submit appropriate financial documentation showing sufficient funding to cover your expenses during your semester or year at USM.

The 2008-09 Undergraduate Exchange budget estimates the cost for one semester or one year of study at USM.

Students must document that they have sufficient funding for all costs not covered as a part of the reciprocal exchange agreement.

Students are advised to consult with their study abroad coordinators at their home school to learn which costs are waived as part of their school's exchange agreement.

In order to document sufficient funding students should complete a Declaration of Finances form and submit the appropriate back up documentation.

STEP #3: Submit a completed Registration Worksheet signed by your Academic Advisor.

Students can find the latest couse offerings in pdf format on the Registar's website.

Students MUST select courses that have CRN #'s that start with either a P or a G.
Example:  G6289 or P7790

P means that the class will be held on the USM Portland Campus
G means that the class will be held on the USM Gorham Campus

Classes that have a CRN that begins with an L, S, B, X or any other letter than P or G are not likely to be available to International Students as they are located at off campus sites which are not accessible by public transportation.

Students can find course descriptions for various courses in the USM undergraduate on-line catalog.

STEP #4: Students hoping to live on campus, who for whom on-campus housing is part of the exchange agreement should complete and submit a housing form as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, housing forms are not yet available in pdf format or for submission on line. So, students who are approved to participate in an exchange to USM should e-mail Kimberly Sinclair in the Office of International Exchange as early on in the process as possible to request a housing form via post.
