* One of seven campuses in Maine's public university system, the University of Southern Maine is the second-largest institution of higher education in the state.

* Created in 1970 by the merger of two state supported institutions under the name University of Maine at Portland-Gorham, and renamed the University of Southern Maine in 1978. Gorham State Teachers College (1945) was founded as Western Maine Normal School in 1878, while the University of Maine at Portland (1957) was founded as Portland Junior College in 1933.

* USM has two campuses, one in the city of Portland (population 64,084) and the other in the rural town of Gorham (population 11,856), as well as a major off-campus location in Lewiston-Auburn.

* USM employs 1,195 people: 323 Faculty, 382 Professional staff, and 490 Classified employees.

* Of the 301 full-time instructional faculty, 73.1% are tenured, 30.2% are female, the average age is 48, and the average length of service is 12 years.

* Approximately 1,450 course sections are offered each semester to both full-time and part-time students from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

* USM's 1994 fall enrollment of 9,628 accounted for 30.8% of all enrollees in the University of Maine system.

* USM also offers a summer session: in summer 1994, 6,719 students chose from 385 course selections.

* During 1993-94, 70,005 persons participated in 1,632 public service activities.

* The E & G Operating Budget for 1994-95 was $51,632,796. *

* The University of Southern Maine is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
