McLellan House
The
McLellan House is
the oldest brick house in town and reputedly the oldest brick
house in the state. Mrs. Martha Gould, a descendant
of Hugh and Elizabeth McLellan, the original owners of the
house, included the college in her will. She stated
"I further direct that the State of Maine, for the use
and benefit of Gorham State Teachers College...shall have
the first right to purchase said real estate, upon condition,
however...that it be know at the 'McLellan House, McLellan
Home or McLellan Library' in honor of my paternal ancestors."
With approval of the Governor's Council,
the house and 27 acres were purchased for $20,000. The
addition of the land increased the existing campus by one-forth,
a promising aspect for future college growth.
