Information for Faculty & Staff regarding the H1N1 virus:

What are the signs and symptoms of this virus in people?
The symptoms of this new Influenza A, H1N1 virus in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A significant number of people who have been infected with this virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting.

What should employees do to avoid the flu?
State officials continue to recommend that Maine residents, including members of the USM community, follow these recommendations:

  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or sleeve

    "Cover Your Cough" CDC Flyer

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
  • Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to avoid infecting them.

  • Because isolation minimizes the spread of the flu, our recommendation will be for employees to stay home until at least 24 hours after any fever has subsided (without the aid of fever reducing medications).
