Faculty Search Outline     September 1, 2005

Note: This provides a brief outline of basic steps only. Go to the Faculty New Hire Checklist for more comprehensive guidance.

  1. Contact Linda Boody (x5385) to obtain search number.
  2. Submit the Position Authorization Form (PAF) and the Ad.
  3. Select search committee. Discuss Rating Procedure and develop the required forms (Individual Rating Sheet, Comparative Rating Sheet  (blank or sample), and Summary of Applications (blank or sample)) to be used in candidate ratings and establishing an adequate written record of the search.
  4. Process incoming applications per the checklist (sending acknowledgement letters, Voluntary Affirmative Action Survey, etc).
  5.  Complete initial paper screening to determine who meets minimums and rate them. Narrow pool to those to be given telephone interview (if one is used), being certain at every stage that the written record supports the choices of who makes the cut.
  6. Further narrow to those to be invited to in-person interview. Develop interview questions. Invite to interview, making arrangements for completion of “Application for USM Employment” and its use at interview.
  7.  Conduct the interviews, make any appropriate changes to candidate ratings on the forms, do reference checks, and recommend candidate for hire.
  8. Obtain salary approval, having planned ahead and developed any required justification (if applicable)  for hiring above $80,000.
  9. Make offer and obtain acceptance. Inform Linda who in turn will prepare an appointment letter. Complete final administrative actions (send New Hire Form to Payroll, complete Post-Search Questionnaire, and send all search –related materials to McLellan House).
