Faculty Search Outline September 1, 2005
Note: This provides a brief outline of basic steps only. Go to
the Faculty New Hire Checklist for more comprehensive
guidance.
- Contact Linda Boody (x5385) to obtain search number.
- Submit the Position Authorization Form
(PAF) and the Ad.
- Select search committee. Discuss Rating Procedure and develop the
required forms (Individual Rating Sheet,
Comparative Rating Sheet (blank or sample), and Summary
of Applications (blank or sample)) to be used in
candidate ratings and establishing an adequate written record of the search.
- Process incoming applications per the checklist (sending
acknowledgement letters, Voluntary Affirmative Action Survey,
etc).
- Complete initial paper screening to determine who meets minimums
and rate them. Narrow pool to those to be given telephone interview (if one is used),
being certain at every stage that the written record supports the choices of who makes the
cut.
- Further narrow to those to be invited to in-person interview. Develop
interview questions. Invite to interview, making arrangements for completion of Application for USM Employment and
its use at interview.
- Conduct the interviews,
make any appropriate changes to candidate ratings on the forms, do reference checks, and recommend
candidate for hire.
- Obtain salary approval, having planned ahead and developed any
required justification (if applicable) for hiring above
$80,000.
- Make offer and obtain acceptance. Inform Linda who in turn will
prepare an appointment letter. Complete final administrative actions (send New Hire Form to Payroll,
complete Post-Search Questionnaire, and send all
search related materials to McLellan House).
