Classified - Screen External Applications
The ESO places the ad which gives a "review date" which is about 10 days from
the date of the ad. That date means that candidates must send required materials to
you to arrive by that date " to ensure consideration". You may treat it as a
hard deadline if you have enough quality applications by that date, or you may continue to
consider others that come in after that date - it's up to you.
At the time of placing the ad, we send you a copy of the ad and Affirmative
Action Surveys/Envelopes.
The steps in screening candidates are as follows:
- Set up Summary of Applications. This
documents the search and will be reviewed by the ESO before permission to interview is
given.
- Acknowledge Applications. Send form
letter acknowledging receipt of application. Enclose a "Voluntary Affirmative
Action Survey and a return envelope (some are provided by the ESO at time of placing the
ad; obtain more from ESO as needed). It is important that this letter be sent prior
to a rejection letter in order to improve the survey return rate.
- Pre-Screen Applications. Using the
screening format that you have set up, narrow the list to those you wish to invite for
interview. You may, at your option, conduct telephone reference
checks of former supervisors to help you narrow the choices, but usually an
evaluation of the application materials will be sufficient. Note: you must,
however, do reference checking of the person you end up wanting to hire.
- Arrange for testing (if applicable). If you wish to have your finalist given
clerical testing, fax the on-line form to
Manpower (USM's testing agent).
Once you've completed the pre-screening, decided which candidates you want to
interview, and filled out the Summary of Applications Form, you are ready for the next
step.
