Classified Job Description
The job description (also called a position description) is the cornerstone of a
search, It is worth taking the time to do it right.
Before preparing the job description, be sure you've thought about whether you really
have a regular position vacancy or whether there is another way to meet the need.
For example, is it possible that all you need is a temporary position.
In a few cases the need can be met by hiring an independent contractor
rather than a USM employee, but there are legal restrictions so you need to first review
whether the position meets the requirements for independent contractor status.
The job description needs to be written in ADA format
and sent to the ESO for review, approval and determination of which classified title is
appropriate. That title then determines the appropriate pay rate for the position.
It may be helpful for you to review the generic System-wide job descriptions
as you determine the essential and marginal functions that are needed for your specific
position at USM.
Once you receive job description/title approval from the ESO, your next step is to
prepare the Position Authorization Form and obtain
the required signatures to authorize the filling of the position.
