Classified - Prepare to Evaluate Candidates
It is not required to set up a search committee for classified positions. In many
cases, it will be sufficient for the supervisor of the position to do applicant screening,
interviewing, reference checks, and selection without using a committee. However, if
a committee approach is used, be aware that if a committee member misses any of the
interviews or is used as a recommendation/reference, s/he may not participate in making a
final selection recommendation.
You may designate someone to be your administrative
support person in managing the logistics of the search, or you may do it
yourself. Please remember that all application materials must be handled and stored
as confidential.
The following are the steps:
- Using the Classified Screening Format, set up
the job-related criteria which you will use to evaluate the applicants.
- review the Classified Screening Process, which
explains the procedures to use in making the cuts to arrive at those candidates you will
interview.
- Set up the
Summary of Applications, which is
a running record of applications and important documentation of the search. This must
be used and all requested information provided.
- Develop interview questions and put them on an Interview
Rating Sheet. You should ask the same set of questions of all
finalists, and then follow up with additional questions as necessary to clarify
information given in their answers. There are some questions that are not permitted
to be asked, and asking them may raise questions of illegal discrimination.
With that preparation completed, you are ready to consider internal candidates.
