What Does Honors Look For in Applicants?
We look for people who care about learning, who are curious about the world around them, and who have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

We look at transcript information and ask for a letter of recommendation from a faculty member you worked with at USM or another institution.
High school applicants... We will look at the recommendation letter(s) included in your USM application.

Your transcript doesn't tell the whole story though. That's why we ask you to include an essay that fills in the gaps.

Please look at our website carefully, familiarize yourself with our mission and courses and write us a new essay. Because we also read your USM application essay, this should be a new piece of writing based on why you want to participate in this specific program. What lead you to USM Honors and what are your goals as a student? How was your experience at your last school? Do you have a mentor that inspires you? If you never considered Honors before, why now? What is your understanding of the program's mission, courses and expectations?

Choosing Honors should be based on your interest in the courses and the opportunities to work closely with other students and faculty. Apply because it's what you want.

*USM Honors can not admit students who are presently in the GO Program at USM without express permission from our Director.

**We recommend students choose either Honors or Russell Scholars in order to avoid duplication of Core/General Education requirements.

How to Apply:
1. If you haven't already, apply to the University of Southern Maine. Once you are admitted as a USM student you may apply to USM Honors.
