planned giving

The Benefactor Society

The Benefactor Society honors alumni and friends who create an endowed fund and/or make provisions for the University of Southern Maine in their wills or through life income gifts or charitable trusts. Members include current and retired faculty and staff, friends who regard USM as their adopted alma mater, and alumni with diverse backgrounds and degrees in areas such as social work, education, music, and business.

While the Society is relatively new, planned giving to USM and its predecessor institutions is not. Over the 125-year history of USM, bequests have played an important role in the growth and success of the University. Planned gifts have provided books for the library, buildings for classrooms and labs, scholarships, and enrichment opportunities for faculty, students, and the community.

We value this rich history and the close affiliation alumni have with various campuses. Benefactor Society members affiliated with the Gorham campus receive Corthell Hall pins while all other alumni and friends receive USM pins. USM's planned giving society previously was known as the Corthell Hall Associates.

Today many members of USM's Benefactor Society create endowed gifts through the University of Southern Maine Foundation that will shape the future of the University by ensuring lasting support for the University's most pressing needs.

The Benefactor Society recognizes those who have made endowed and planned gifts to USM with a certificate of appreciation, a lapel pin, and listings in the Annual Report of Gifts. At the annual luncheon each spring, members learn more about recent University developments and enjoy the company of other members who have given similar priority to the University.

If you have planned an estate or life income gift to benefit USM, we will be honored to add you to the rolls of the Benefactor Society. All you need to do is complete a one-page acceptance of membership form (PDF file: 39k/2 pages*) or contact Elizabeth Shorr, vice president of University Advancement and Planning, at (207) 780-4708 or eshorr@usm.maine.edu.
