Workstudy

USM-GIS is always looking for students with Federal Work-Study funding who are interested in working at the GIS Lab. No experience is necessary. Responsibilities include supervising the lab when it is open, helping users with system and software operation, and helping the lab manager with system maintenance. Workstudy students with some GIS experience help develop and test course modules and workshops, troubleshoot software issues, and assist in research.

Some of the projects that workstudy students have worked on in the past include:

1. Assisted development of GIS module for Geology course
2. Tested GIS module for Planning course
3. Researched online archeological GIS datasets
4. Developed the Digital Atlas of Maine
5. Mapped cemeteries in Gorham, Maine using GPS
6. Developed and Presented a Seminar on Poster Design
7. Updated and redesiged USM-GIS Website

Future projects include:

1. Help develop workshops on open-source GIS software
2. Mosaic historic aerial photographs
3. Digitize features from historic aerial photography
4. Extract vegetation information from LIDAR data
5. Land Cover classifications and landscape ecology analyses
6. Assist development and testing of new course modules
7. Support additional research and projects as they come up

Occasionally, USM-GIS will have funding related to grants or consulting projects that is available for student workers. This funding is not based on Federal Work-Study, so it is available to any student. Generally, at least one or two semesters of experience with GIS or Remote Sensing is required for these positions.
