Software Resources

Because the GIS Lab is a University Resource, the software is available to all members of the University Community. Additionally, people outside the University may come to the lab for personal assistance during GIS Walk-in Clinics.

Thanks to a site license with ESRI, the GIS software ArcGIS is available in all student computer labs, as well as the GIS Lab. Another benefit of the site license is that registered students, faculty, and staff may take classes at ESRI's Virtual Campus. These are online GIS courses on a variety of topics. The list of qualifying courses is available at the ESRI website. Contact the GIS Lab if you are interested in taking a Virtual Campus course.

In addition to ArcGIS, the computers in the GIS Lab are equipped with the following specialized, licensed software that is available in few other places on campus.

  1. ERDAS Imagine and Photogrammetry Suite
  2. Clark University's IDRISI
  3. Trimble Pathfinder Office
  4. ENVI

Additionally, the lab has a variety of open source software packages installed and regularly updated. These offer students additional options beyond the conventional packages. These include:

  1. Google Earth
  2. NASA's World Wind
  3. DNR Garmin (GPS software for handheld GPS units)
  4. GRASS
  5. quantum GIS
  6. PointVue LE (Lidar processing utility)
  7. Map Window, including the BASINS extension
