Internships

Internships are a way for students to gain valuable experience in their field in a non-classroom setting. They are an opportunity to work directly with professionals, often in an authentic working environment. Past successful internships have included:

  1. Shore-based Remote Sensing for Oil Spill Detection, Gulf of Maine Research Institute
  2. Data Management for Ordinance Update in Bowdoinham, Maine
  3. Supporting Comprehensive Plan Update in Bowdoinham, Maine
  4. Woodlot Management

Generally, students interested in an internship will first contact an organization where they would like to work and inquire whether internships are available with that organization. Sometimes the process works the other way and towns, businesses, and nonprofits contact USM-GIS and associated faculty looking for students to fill internships.

Current internship opportunities include:

  1. Supporting GIS in Bowdoinham, Maine
  2. Cemetery mapping in Gorham, Maine

Details about these posts are avaiable at the GIS Lab. You may also contact USM-GIS for details if you are interested in any of these opportunities.

NOTE: If students plan to receive academic credit for an internship, they need to work with a faculty sponsor to craft the internship and ensure that it meets the requirements for credit. Contact with a faculty sponsor should begin as early in the internship process as possible.
