Remote Sensing, GEO 305, will be offered as an online course for non-USM students during the Fall 2009 semester. This is the first time that Remote Sensing will be offered as an online course. It is a great opportunity for anyone who does not live near USM to receive instruction in the theory and techniques of image processing and analysis for digital data acquired from airplane and satellite platforms. Topics will include image enhancement and classifications, spectral analysis, and landscape change detection techniques. Practical applications of natural and built landscapes are considered using remotely sensed datasets and techniques. At this time, the online format is only available for non-USM students. Contact the instructor Dr. Firooza Pavri for more information about this exciting opportunity.

This fall, four GIS courses and three GIS-related electives for the GIS Certificate will be offered at the University of Southern Maine. The GIS courses are Introduction to ArcGIS, Remote Sensing, GIS Applications I, and GIS Application II. The GIS-related electives are Structured Problem Solving with Java and its companion course Structured Programming Laboratory, and Computer Aided Design. Some of these courses may be full. If so, students are encouraged to contact the course instructors and inquire about overenrolling in the course. Sometimes instructors are able to accomodate students who ask to overenroll. Registration information is available on the USM Registrar's Office web page.

During Summer 2009, the GIS Lab in Gorham will be staffed regularly. Anyone from the University Community and the surrounding community may get advice and support for current and potential GIS projects. However, due to variable schedules, we recommend anyone interested in stopping by to call in advance to make sure that a staff member is available to meet with you.
