Entry Year Experience Courses

Entry Year Experience (EYE) courses are the first component in a curriculum designed by the General Education Curriculum Planning Group for consideration as a replacement for the current Core.  These courses are interdisciplinary in focus, and are designed by teams of 3-5 faculty from different disciplines focusing on a common theme or problem.  Entry Year Experience courses are designed to accomplish a number of important goals.  Successful entry courses will improve student preparedness for and performance in subsequent college study by enhancing student inclination and ability to view multiple and complex issues from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and to see the distinctions and connections between them; they will increase purposeful and meaningful cooperation and collaboration between faculty designing and teaching courses at the introductory level; finally, EYE courses better ensure a common educational experience for our entering students.

The following pages contain information about current EYE pilot courses.  These courses are not departmentally based.  They are currently being administered by the Office of Undergraduate Education.  Please contact Susan McWilliams (780-4755, smcwilms@usm.maine.edu) or Judy Tizon (228-8398, tizon@usm.maine.edu)for further information.
