Dr. Nathan Hamilton, Associate Professor of Archaeology, recently chaired the 33rd Conference on New England Archaeology at The Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology at Phillips Academy. The focus of the conference was "Black Archaeology in New England: Theory, Dialogue, and Interpretation."

Nathan Hamilton's long term research on the Isles of Shoals was recognized in a book by J. Dennis Robinson entitled "Under the Isle of Shoals: Archaeology & Discovery on Smuttynose Island." The book was recently reviewed in the Portland Press Herald.

Nathan Hamilton, Associate Professor of Archaeology, has received a sabbatical for fall 2013. Dr. Hamilton has engaged in the long-term research and examination of maritime communities and coastal environments along the Atlantic coastline. For his sabbatical, he will continue his archaeological research of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century fishing stations on the Isles of Shoals.

Firooza Pavri, Associate Professor of Geography, co-authored the book "Wetland Environments: A Global Perspective" published by Wiley-Blackwell.

Undergraduate students in Geography-Anthropology, Kari Beaulieu and Pauline LaBelle Morgan, received NASA fellowships for 2012-13. They will work with Firooza Pavri and use space-based satellite imagery to document land use and environmental changes at sites in North America and India.

Sam Merrill, Associate Research Professor & Director of the New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School of Public Service will speak on "Cost-benefit analysis and community engagement for adaptation to sea level rise and storm surge - a new GIS-based approach" for GIS Day on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. at 102 Wishcamper Center, USM Portland Campus.
