I received a B.A. in Anthropology from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in Archaeology from Cambridge University. I have conducted research and taught at USM since 1994. My research interests include the archaeology, ethnohistory, ethnography and historical ecology of North Atlantic islands and coasts. Although I have participated in archaeological research in the US Northeast, Greenland, Iceland, England and France, my main research area is the Shetland Islands, the northernmost islands of Scotland. I am currently finishing a book on a Norse farmstead excavation in Shetland, and directing the Shetland Islands Climate and Settlement Project, an interdisciplinary study of archaeological sites in coastal sand environments.
