The USM Art Galleries and USM Art Department are hosting 3 speakers for the fall Lecture Series in the Visual Arts.

Portland artist Aaron Stephan, will give a talk Thursday, October 20, 4:15 p.m. in Room 10 of Bailey Hall on the Gorham campus. Stephan has exhibited his works in the Portland area as well as in Boston, Brooklyn, and Connecticut. Influenced by philosophy,  Stephan explores unusual ways of seeing everyday objects: the way we relate to them, their location, meaning and culture. Commissioned as part of Maine’s Percent for Art program, Stephan’s sculpture "LIFT" located in the atrium of the University of Southern Maine’s new Joel and Linda Abromson Community Education Center is wooden table with six chairs that stands roughly 20 feet tall. Stephan received an M.F.A. from the Maine College of Art and was the 2005 Louise Bourgeois fellow at the Yaddo artists community in Saratoga Springs, NY. His work has been featured in many of Maine’s leading exhibition spaces including the ICON Gallery, SPACE, the ICA at MECA, The Hay Gallery, The Filament Gallery, and The Center for Maine Contemporary Art.

Ted Wolff, accomplished author and art critic, will discuss the work of Joyce Treiman from 11 a.m. -1 p.m., Thursday, October 27, at the USM Art Gallery on the Gorham Campus. People are invited to bring a bag lunch. A professional artist, art appraiser, and former art critic for the Christian Science Monitor, Ted Wolff has written two books on Morris Graves and a biography on Joyce Treiman. He previously lectured at the Maine Coast Artists in Rockport and Portland Museum of Art. Wolf will also hold a Gallery talk October 27 at 6 p.m., during the 4-7 p.m. opening reception for Joyce Trieman: Paintings, Drawings, and Prints at the USM Art Gallery , Gorham campus.

Nationally known artist Lissa Hunter will give a talk Thursday, November 17, from 11 a.m.-noon in Room 10 of Bailey Hall, Gorham campus. Hunter explores the coiled basket form for sculptural possibilities far beyond its traditional beginnings. Hunter's the use of varied materials and other structural techniques expands the possibilities of expression of ideas, ranging from world politics to family histories and loss. She is represented by the Nancy Margolis Gallery, N.Y.. Her work is widely exhibited in the United States and is in the collections of Smithsonian American Art Museum, Renwick Gallery, Washington DC , the Museum of Art and Design, New York N.Y., and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston MA. Hunter received her MFA, Textile Design, Indiana University, Bloomington IN and a BA in Painting, from Indiana University, Bloomington IN. This talk is rescheduled due to snow cancellation in Spring 2005.
