The work of Deborah Whitney of Portland will be featured in the upcoming exhibit in the USM Area Gallery, in Woodbury Campus Center, Bedford St, Portland from Jan 13th - March 3, with an opening reception Friday, Jan. 13, 5-7 pm.

Whitney's work is inspired by the Australia aboriginal belief that we live our lives connected to a parallel, more spiritual, and symbolic universe. Her work explores how our consciousness is constantly changing, influenced by our social conditioning as well as our stored memories and absorbed experiences.

The oil paintings in Deborah Whitney's visual diary are compilations of moments in time, portrayed through a series of images installed to flow together like frames of a film strip. The paintings, primarily monochromatic portraits, are completed in one sitting, then grouped with a minimum of three other paintings. The installation's strength derives from the juxtaposition of disparate images, colors, and scale. With no discernible order, related only by Whitney's stream of consciousness, the meaning of her universe of images is left open.
Whitney is owner of Whitney Art Works, one of Portland's leading galleries. She has recently shown her paintings at the Anthony Giordano Gallery, Dowling College, Oakdale, NY; Yellow House Works of Art, Greenport, NY; and Mills Pond House, Smithtown, NY.

The Area Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday,  8am - 10pm; Friday, 8am- 5pm. The exhbit is free and open to the public. School and community groups are welcome to attend.
