Jackson's series titled The First Timer consists of photographic diptychs which portray the "before and after'" transformation of individuals. As a series, First Timer is an experiment in character and narrative. The images are primarily shot in 35mm film and hand printed directly from the negative.
While First Timer is a photography-based project, it has also evolved into live performance installations.
Derek Jackson has organized performance art pieces at Exit Art, Artist's Space, and the Bronx Museum in NYC.
