External Programs
Pioneers Program Requirements
To apply for Pioneers, you must be a Maine high school student that has applied for admission into one of the following USM science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors:
- Biology
- Biochemistry
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- Environmental Science
- General Science (Undergrad catalog, "Self-designed Major")
- Geosciences
- Industrial Technology
- Mathematics
- Natural and Applied Sciences
- Physics
Additional requirements include:
- A Math SAT of 650 or higher
- A 3.5 or B+ average grade in science and math at the high school level
- Strong inclination to live on campus in select housing
- Letter of recommendation from high school science or math teachers
- Your Pioneers essay
- On-campus visit
- Pre-acceptance interview
Renewal of the award each year will be contingent on maintaining a 3.0 GPA in your chosen major.
