Diana Hacker's A Writer's Reference (Fifth Edition, Bedford, ISBN 0-312-39767-4).  Students will be asked to use this handbook in Sociology and many other courses at USM.  You may also be interested in the book of exercises to accompany A Writer's Reference.  Exam copies are available in 411 Luther Bonney, and instructors may photocopy selections from the exercises.  This text is required for all sections of College Writing.

    Summaries of Textbook reviews are available in the English Department Office.  In addition, you can find copies of these texts to examine in the 3LB Part-Time offices, in the History Department office in Gorham, and in the College Writing Program Office in 411 Luther Bonney.  Please do not remove these copies from the offices.  Contact publishers for personal exam copies of the books you would like to review at home.

       

    We also encourage you to order 5-10 copies of the American Heritage College Dictionary (third edition Houghton Mifflin ISBN 0-395-66918-9), as a recommended text for students who do not already own a college dictionary.
