ABOUT THE ENGLISH MAJOR AT USM

The USM English major is designed
to lead students toward a sensitive understanding of English,
American, and other literature written by men and women of the past
and present who have memorably expressed their personal visions and
the ideas of their times. It is structured to provide insights into
critical and theoretical problems encountered by all who wish to
view literature from diverse perspectives. The major also provides
students with the opportunity to participate in the creative
process, developing their talents through courses and workshops in
fiction writing, poetry, and drama.
Literature courses offered
in the Women's Studies Program, New England Studies Program, and
Foreign Languages and Classics Department enhance the English major.
An Internship in Professional Writing helps students work locally to
develop skills as writers, editors, and reporters. Also, USM's
foreign language exchange programs and the department's own exchange
program with Nijmegen University in Holland offer rewarding
opportunities for studying abroad.
Adjunct instructors significantly
complement the program with interests as diverse as Women's Studies,
Musical Composition, Irish Literature, and Newswriting. Several have
published books, short stories, feature magazine and newspaper
articles, and poetry; have won awards for their literary efforts;
and have presented papers at conferences. We are proud that so many
of them choose to return to our program year after year.
English Majors have also
contributed to the program by organizing "The Word
Society" of which all English majors have membership. They
promote interest in our program, have had writing competitions, have
provided scholarships to the Stonecoast Writing Conference, provide
input to faculty searches, and help sponsor visiting speakers. The
English Department is fortunate to have such dedicated, creative,
and enthusiastic student support.
English majors have careers in
many areas, usually in business, teaching, and other professions.
More and more majors are entering medical, law, and academic
graduate schools, having found that the breadth of experience
English study provides prepares them to work successfully in diverse
fields. USM English majors have been strong candidates for admission
to the country's finest graduate English programs.
