Placement Procedures

English 100C

University of Southern Maine

At the beginning of the semester, you may find that you have students in 100 who should be in English 009, ESL, or English 120.  We will be able to move some of these students into the appropriate class.  If we can’t move students, we can talk with them about tutoring and the other resources available to them at USM.

In order to help each student find the best class, please take the following steps:

1. Have your students write for at least 45 minutes in class or at home during the first week of school.  Give them a short passage to read and ask them to write about an idea, rather than a narrative or feeling.  Please feel free to photocopy and use the prompt attached.

2. Ask each student to write his or her social security number and local phone number on the paper.

3. If one of the writing samples is a problem, please bring it to Ann Dean, Director of College Writing.

Ann Dean

Phone: 4092

Office: Luther Bonney 411 (hours: 10-5 weekdays during the first 10 days of school).

Mailbox: Luther Bonney 311 (open 8AM to 4:30 PM weekdays)

Instructors at Gorham or the campus centers can fax papers to Ann Dean in the English Department office, 780-5457.

4.  Ann will check the student’s placement score and academic record and then contact the student to advise him or her about the appropriate class to take.

5.  It is impossible to move students after the end of the second week of the semester, so please contact Ann about any questions before that date.
