USM Women's Studies Program

 

GOAL I: Campus Climate

The Women's Studies Program will:

  • sustain co-sponsorship of multicultural events with the Office of the Provost and the deans;
  • include diversity issues and emphasis in all appropriate reports and communications.

GOAL II: Curriculum and Academic Experience

Work Plans for Goal II

Short Term

  • The Vice President for Enrollment Management will lead USM toward a common first year experience for all students that includes issues of harassment, oppression, racism, and privilege in its many dimensions will be included in the discussion.
  • The Women's Studies Program will develop new sites for internships to increase community options.

Summer Session will

  • Discuss the possibility of hosting a summer institute with the Women's Studies Program;

The Women's Studies Program will

  • Sustain Women's History Month programs as diversity issues;
  • sustain and extend the regular Women's Studies, i.e., conferences, workshops on curriculum infusion, retreat discussions on pedagogy;
  • sustain courses that address issues of knowledge and curriculum, such as WST 280, "Women, Knowledge, and Power" and topic courses that emphasize the role of the academy in culture.

 

GOAL III. Student Retention

The Universities Libraries will

  • review and update print and electronic information summaries and subject guides to include information specific to issues of race, class, and gender.

The Women's Studies Program will

  • publicize courses that address international issues and issues specific to students of color an of immigrant communities;
  • publicize the central focus on differences, current social issues, race, class, and gender in the Introduction to Women's Studies curriculum;
  • encourage participation in Women's Studies by faculty of color and international faculty including courses about issues of race, class and gender taught by them;
  • sustain and increase links with community agencies for programming;
  • build outreach activities into appropriate courses.

 

GOAL IV. Faculty and Staff Recruitment/Retention

The Women's Studies Program will

  • develop programs for new faculty at USM to meet and discuss issues of diversity and working climate;
  • establish and develop a Women's Studies Collection and Women's Studies in the Library and create links with Gay,Lesbian,Bisexual and Transgender Archives and African American Archives;
  • establish guidelines for training and mentoring work study staff and temporary office staff.


ONGOING

The Provost will continue to provide special funding opportunities for women faculty to gain leadership experience in higher education administration (example:HERS program).

 

GOAL V. Increase in Students of Color and Ethnicity

The Women's Studies Program will set up a web site which includes a page on diversity issues and activities.

 

GOAL VI. Adequate Fiscal and Human Resources
