Diversity Plan: 2003 - 2005

Telecommunications and Campus Card Services

The Telecommunications and Campus Card offices pride themselves in being distinctive offices that support a progressive environment for working and learning. Ours are responsive departments that respect and value the diversity of our community and we provide a secure and comfortable environment that promotes community involvement in the achievement of our common goal: customer service.

GOAL I: Climate

USM continuously strives to make the campus a welcoming climate inclusive in its understanding and integration across multiple dimensions of diversity, including, but not limited to, diversity based on race and ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, gender expression and identity, religion, and class.

  • All staff will be encouraged to participate in any and all training and staff development opportunities relating to diversity.

GOAL II: Academic Experience

The USM academic experience, which includes both curricular and co-curricular activities, increasingly reflects the multiplicity and diversity of communities and cultures locally, nationally and globally.

GOAL III: Student Recruitment and Retention

USM strives to increase the diversity of its student body through active outreach and recruitment. USM increasingly works to develop structures and mechanisms that support the retention of all students, particularly students of color and other underrepresented populations.

  • The Telecommunications office provides department funds for student workers. This allows students without work study funds to remain employed and, hopefully, at USM.

Goal IV: Faculty and Staff Recruitment and Retention

USM strives to increase the diversity of faculty and staff, particularly faculty and staff of color, but inclusive of other underrepresented populations as defined in Goal I.

  • Continue our existing hiring policies of interviewing competent applicants from under-represented populations.

  • Encourage applications from under-represented groups in all recruitment advertisements.

  • The Telecommunications and Campus Card offices are staffed by a diverse work force in relation to age, gender and race. We will continue to ensure that our policies and procedures related to searches and hiring are sensitive to the diversity goals of USM.
