University of Southern Maine

Diversity Plan: 2003 - 2005

Management Information Services

Since its inception as a Title III program in 1983 and a USM office in 1989, MIS has been one of the most diverse offices on campus. We have employed men and women of various ages and backgrounds, and students from various nationalities including students from Israel, China, Spain, Pakistan, India, Rumania, etc. MIS seeks the best personnel and deems diverse personnel as bringing an enrichment of cultural and technical ideas to the office.

Diversity goals for 2003-2006 are:

Goal I: Climate

USM continuously strives to make the campus a welcoming climate inclusive in its understanding and integration across multiple dimensions of diversity, including, but not limited to, diversity based on race and ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, gender expression and identity, religion, and class.

  • Provide encouragement and support for appropriate training and staff development for all staff to attend diversity workshops, and promote a sensitivity and understanding of cultural differences in its contacts both inside and out of the University.

  • Develop and produce information in reports and websites which will be sensitive to individual needs and insure a welcoming and responsive environment to multicultural populations.

GOAL II: Academic Experience

The USM academic experience, which includes both curricular and co-curricular activities, increasingly reflects the multiplicity and diversity of communities and cultures locally, nationally and globally.

  • Provide an open door to all faculty, staff and students seeking information and services from MIS and provide those services in a sensitive and concerned way regardless of employment status, race, gender, religious belief, enrollment status, or any other factor which contribute to a multicultural population.

  • Rely on the many rich and diverse personnel available within the University community to advise and support an exchange of ideas for the development MIS projects in a manner inclusive to a multicultural community.

GOAL III: Student Recruitment and Retention

USM strives to increase the diversity of its student body through active outreach and recruitment. USM increasingly works to develop structures and mechanisms that support the retention of all students, particularly students of color and other underrepresented populations.

  • Ensure that information provided by MIS is accurate and indicative of faculty, staff or student populations regardless of representation or under-representation.

  • Ensure that all services provided are responsive and inclusive, and appropriate to diversity efforts at all levels of the institution.

GOAL IV: Faculty and Staff Recruitment and Retention

USM strives to increase the diversity of faculty and staff, particularly faculty and staff of color, but inclusive of other underrepresented populations as defined in Goal I.

  • Ensure office policies and procedures are sensitive to diversity goals of USM.

  • Provide access and information to MIS resources in support of diversity goals at USM.
