Diversity Plan: 2003 - 2005

Labor Relations and Payroll

Labor Relations(LR) and Payroll(PR) are part of USM's overall Human Resources Services division and as part of that enterprise supports the services, programs and activities which enable USM to offer a quality work environment and to be an employer of choice.

GOAL I: Climate

USM continuously strives to make the climate a welcoming climate inclusive in its understanding and integration across multiple dimensions of diversity, including but not limited to, diversity based on race and ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, gender expression and identity, religion and class.

The role of payroll and labor relations is to provide prompt, considerate and confidential information to USM employees regarding compensation, contract issues and immigration. In addition, it is to provide employee data and information such as address labels and lists to USM and the University of Maine System. This unit also provides oversight of the legal obligations and requirements of the workplace by displaying laws, policies and procedures as well as by sending information to employees through the mail.

GOAL II: Curriculum and Academic Experience

The USM academic experience, which includes both curricular and co-curricular activities, increasingly reflects the multiplicity and diversity of communities and cultures locally, nationally and globally.

LR and PR supports the curriculum and academic experience through its work with multicultural faculty and staff, especially those international faculty and staff who need assistance in order to navigate the state, federal and international processes enabling them to live and teach in this country.

GOAL III: Student Recruitment and Retention

USM strives to increase the diversity of its student body through active outreach and recruitment. USM increasingly works to develop structures and mechanisms that support the retention of all students, particularly students of color and other underrepresented populations.

While primary activities of this unit do not directly impact student recruitment and retention, to the extent that we support the recruitment, service and retention of a diverse faculty and staff, our efforts there will positively impact the recruitment and retention of students. A multicultural workplace is a quality workplace and is also a quality learning environment for students.
