Diversity Plan:
2003 - 2005
GOAL I: Campus Climate
USM continuously strives to make the campus a welcoming climate
inclusive in its understanding and integration across multiple
dimensions of diversity, including, but not limited to diversity
based on race and ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation,
age, gender expression and identity, religion and class.
Continue to maintain a welcoming atmosphere to all visitors
to stores in Portland, Lewiston and Gorham. Care will continue
to be taken by staff in all verbal and written communication
to be aware, understanding and respectful of differences in
age, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, class and
physical ability.
New staff will attend diversity workshops when offered. All
staff will be encouraged to participate in training opportunities
offered on or off campus.
Departmental managers, who are responsible for buying and
merchandising inventory, will continue efforts to include
the need to celebrate diversity in all planning activities.
Planning continues to include: organizing holiday or special
event tie-ins, stocking merchandise of interest to our diverse
customer population, partnering with special interest groups
on and off campus to organize book signings and conferences,
welcoming special orders and encouraging suggestions for additions
to store inventory.
As budgetary and space constraints allow, efforts will be
made to create a more welcoming environment for those visitors
to the stores in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston-Auburn who
are physically challenged.
GOAL III: Academic Experience
USM strives to increase the diversity of its student body
through active outreach and recruitment. USM increasingly
works to develop structures and mechanisms that support the
retention of all students, particularly students of color
and other underrepresented populations.
Textbook department managers will continue to collaborate
with the Office of Support for Students with Disabilities,
faculty and publishers to ensure that class materials are
provided in a timely manner. The retention of those students
who require accommodations in the form of readers or note
takers is enhanced if materials are available when necessary.
GOAL IV Staff Recruitment and Retention
USM strives to increase the diversity of faculty and staff,
particularly faculty and staff of color, but inclusive of
other underrepresented populations as defined in Goal I.
Department managers will continue efforts to recruit members
of underrepresented populations for the convenient on-campus
work-study employment opportunities available in the Portland,
Lewiston and Gorham Offices.
Department managers will continue to work closely with the
Division of Human Resources to ensure that qualified members
of underrepresented populations are made aware of staff openings.
