Applied Medical Science Department Goals

Goal I: Promoting Diversity Acceptance in AMS

  • Invite Office of Campus Diversity & Equity personnel to educate AMS faculty, staff and graduate students on issues regarding diversity, tolerance, harassment and discrimination

  • Emphasize to students USM diversity policies during new students orientation

  • Link AMS web page to USM Diversity Statement

  • Ascertain all lab facilities are in compliance with ADA requirements

  • Evaluate outcome of AMS diversity enhancement effort periodically and report progress to ASET

  • Evaluate outcome of AMS diversity enhancement effort periodically and report progress to ASET Dean annually.


Goal II: Promoting diversity through curricula and instruction

  • Incorporate into instruction materials important work accomplished by investigators of diverse background

  • Incorporate into instruction materials relevant information of interest to students of diverse background

  • Invite guest lecturers of diverse background to participate in instruction and seminar activities

  • Seek funding to support bioscience training programs designed for students with disabilities

  • Evaluate outcome of AMS diversity enhancement effort periodically and report progress to ASET Dean annually


Goal III: Recruitment and Retention of Underrepresented Students

  • Invite Office of Campus Diversity & Equity personnel to educate AMS faculty, staff & graduate students on issues regarding diversity, tolerance, harassment and discrimination (as for Goal I)

  • Prohibit use of language, physical action and audio/visual material either insensitive to diversity tolerance or considered an harassment act

  • Continue to sustain excellent track record in recruitment and retention of qualified female graduate students

  • Continue to generate better recruitment packages to compete for recruitment of qualified underrepresented students

  • Involve current and former minority students in the effort of recruiting new underrepresented students

  • Initiate effort to recruit underrepresented graduate students from the pool of undergraduate students at USM

  • Continue to seek nonrestricted financial support to attract international students

  • Evaluate outcome of minority student recruitment and retention effort periodically and report progress to ASET Dean annually


Goal IV: Minority Employee Recruitment & Retention

  • Consult Office of Campus Diversity & Equity in planning of faculty and staff recruitment activities

  • Encourage application from underrepresented group in all recruitment advertisement

  • Advertise job opening on media or through channels that reach underrepresented groups

  • Include qualified minority job applicants on the short list of candidates for further consideration

  • Involve current minority employees in the effort of recruiting new personnel

  • Prohibit use of language, physical action and audio/visual material either insensitive to diversity tolerance or considered an harassment act

  • Evaluate outcome of minority employee recruitment effort and report progress to ASET Dean annually
